DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Highway Department Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, repair, record keeping, and parts inventory for the town highway department fleet.  The fleet includes 6-wheeled, heavy-duty dump trucks with hydraulic plows, wings and sanders, pick-ups, heavy equipment and small miscellaneous gas powered tools and equipment.  The Mechanic should also be able to perform light body work and welding. 

ADDITIONAL Responsibilities

Employee will be expected to perform routine road maintenance duties in a safe and efficient manner.  This includes but is not limited to: snow plowing, materials transport, road construction, operation of chain-saws, manual labor (including loading trucks, digging ditches, cleaning and repairing catch basins), and other tasks as assigned by the employee's supervisor. 

Requirements

§         Candidates must have a proven record of experience working on large trucks, heavy equipment (e.g. loader, backhoe) and handheld equipment (e.g. chainsaws.)

§         Candidate should have experience with automotive computer diagnostics.

§         Candidate should have experience in detailed record keeping and inventory.

§         Candidates must possess a valid NYS Commercial Driver's License (class A or B.)

§         Candidate must be proficient in operating trucks and equipment (plow, sander, backhoe, loader, chipper, chain-saw, etc.) in a safe and appropriate manner.

§         Experience with driving, plowing, asphalt application, or construction preferred.

§         Candidate should be an organized, self starter and able to work as part of a team.

§         Candidates should be of a physical condition to meet the demands of the position.
